Pinpoint Molecular Ltd is using our unique resin technology to screen drugs that are used to treat other conditions but might also work for Alzheimer’s Disease.
Alzheimer’s Disease is characterised by the accumulation of toxic aggregates of β-amyloid protein. If we can get rid of these toxic aggregates or stop them from forming in the first place we may be able to slow the progression of the disease.
The figure above shows the results of a drug screen. β-amyloid protein was incubated with various drugs to look for an effect on protein aggregation. Most drugs have no effect, but some drugs show promise in reducing aggregation. For example, compound 201824 reduced aggregation by 42% compared to the control (no drug).
Why use repurposed drugs?
- Repurposed drugs have already been shown to be safe for humans
- Repurposed drugs can be easily prescribed for repurposed off-label use
- Repurposed drugs are likely to be much cheaper than new drugs
- Repurposed drugs, in combination with new drugs, might enhance treatment.
